THE SCRIPTURAL BASIS FOR THE USE OF TAMBOURINES AND TABRETS

One of the tools of worship that are being restored to the church TODAY is the tabret and the tambourine. Jeremiah 31:4 says, "Again I will build you, and you shall be rebuilt, O virgin of Israel! You shall again be adorned with your tambourines, and shall go forth in the dances of those who rejoice." (NKJ)

What are "tabrets"? They are colorful, round-shaped worship tools with fringe on them and oftentimes a designed center. They make no sound because the center is comprised of fabric. Most types of worship that can be done with tambourines can also be done with tabrets. The tabret is not a musical instrument, but is symbolic of the tambourine, which is a musical instrument.

The Hebrew words for "tambourine", "timbrel", and "tabret" are all essentially the same word in the Bible. They are used interchangeably.

1. A timbrel was used to celebrate the victories of our God. Exodus 15:20-21 "Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam answered them: 'Sing to the LORD, for He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider he has thrown into the sea!'" (NKJ)

2. A timbrel was used to worship. 1 Chronicles 13:8 "Then David and all Israel played music before God with all their might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets. (NKJ) See also Psalms 81:1-2

3. A timbrel was used in the dance. Psalms 149:3-4 "Let them praise His name with the dance; let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp. For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation. Psalms 150:4 - "Praise Him with the timbrel and dance; praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!" (NKJ)

4. A timbrel is a weapon in our hands. Isaiah 30:32: And in every place where the staff of punishment passes, which the LORD lays on him, it will be with tambourines and harps; and in battles of brandishing He will fight with it." (NKJ)

A tabret, unlike the tambourine, affords the use of more symbolic meaning as a tool of worship. As well as being an instrument of worship, it can also be an instrument of warfare, as we have seen in Isaiah 30:32. Tabrets can be very plain or very detailed, but they are beautiful instruments of worship either way.

In using the tabret in worship, some of the most common worship patterns are to make a figure eight in front of you, to the sides, and overhead. Most important of all is to be led by the Holy Spirit whether one is using the tabret, tambourine, or streamers. The Holy Spirit will often inspire certain movements. These movements will usually be an interpretation of what the Lord is doing in the heavenly realm or in the service, or they might be a personal expression of worship from you to the Father, or an expression of warfare.
